Acharya Lhakpa Tshering was born in Bhutan. He began schooling in his hometown early on, and the age of twelve, he entered monastic school.In 1993 he enrolled at Karma Shri Nalanda Institute (KSNI), for Buddhist Studies, in Rumtek, Sikkim. During his final years as a student at KSNI, he served as an assistant teacher and member of the Student Welfare Committee.

Upon completing his studies in 2002, he received the degree of Acharya, or master of Buddhist Studies. After graduation, he served as co-librarian with Dilyak Drupon Rinpoche, and as a teacher at KSNI, also working as an editor for Nitartha Publications  in Kathmandu, Nepal.

In 2006 Acharya Lhakpa moved to Nalanda West in Seattle, Washington where he began familiarizing with Western culture and continues to support the center and its students. Acharya Lhakpa Tshering is a resident teacher at Nalanda West and visiting teacher of Nalandabodhi centers in the northeastern United States.
